The VOLCANO story
We didn't start with placemaking. We grew into it.
A story about music, culture and the stubborn belief that people can change a place — if the place gives them something to belong to.
In 2008, VOLCANO began in music. Before we were talking about neighbourhoods and city districts, we were putting young creatives in charge of real budgets, real audiences and real stakes. We were learning what happens when talent meets trust, a useful network and room to make something matter.
That experience became our point of view: culture is not an add-on. It is infrastructure for imagination, connection and action.
Kristian Riis knows this from both sides. As co-founder and guitarist of Nephew, he helped take a band from the scramble for small gigs to becoming one of Denmark's defining live acts — selling more than 500,000 albums and playing Orange Scene three times along the way. That journey taught us the value of conviction, professional sparring and a community that can carry ambition further.
Since then, the work has grown in scale. We now work on major placemaking projects that bring people together: European partnerships, architecture competitions, festivals and large-scale screen productions with TV 2. Different formats, same question: how do you make a place — or a moment — matter to the people in it?
Placemaking is growing. So are we. We bring people, culture and ambition into the same room, then build the momentum to take an idea from first conversation to something real.
